Beirut-born Rabbi Dr. Elie Abadie, a prominent rabbi and scholar of Sephardic Judaism, recently relocated from New York City to the Gulf metropolis of Dubai to serve as the community’s senior rabbi. The Jewish Council of the Emirates is the country’s oldest congregation and the only one recognized by local authorities. Rabbi Abadie also heads the Association of Gulf Jewish Communities created by the UAE, Bharian, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia which oversees Jewish life and the Beth Din of Arabia. For many years, he served as the spiritual leader of the Edmond J. Safra Synagogue in New York City. He is an officer of the Rabbinical Council of America and co-president of Justice for Jews from Arab Countries, a group advocating for Jewish refugees from the Middle East.
